BEHIND THE CAMERA

Born in 1982 into a British family, I lived in Norwich until January of 2019. I’ve committed the last ten years to documenting the beauty of forsaken, dilapidated, or forgotten architectural wonders; in addition, I’ve started exploring ruins, heritage spaces, and deserted areas. I started taking architectural photos in late 2013, and it took me into hidden corners and abandoned areas of cities all over the world.

‘Decadence,’ my first series, began my investigation into deserted buildings. I’ve spent almost ten years building up a comprehensive portfolio that features some of the world’s most fascinating places. My approach to photography focuses on capturing clear lines and vibrant colour palettes in the moment, then enhancing the photos with modern post-processing methods.

Numerous international competitions have recognised my work, and in 2017 it won both the ND Awards and the Chromatic Colour Awards in the Architecture category. I placed second in the International Photography of the Year competition’s Architecture category in March 2018. In the exterior category, my 2019 photo “Circle of Trust,” taken in Beirut, Lebanon, was recently shortlisted for the 2021 Architectural Photographer of the Year award.

I debuted “Fabrica – A Journey Into Decay” and “Abandoned Lebanon” – published by Jonglez, in the autumn of 2021.

I have been a Pro Partner for Benro tripods since 2017 and I was an ambassador for Tenba  Camera Bags also for some time I also held an affiliation with 5.11 Tactical, who helped me out with luggage and clothing during 2019.

TRAVEL

Photography and travel go hand in hand. And I had travelled throughout Europe extensively before I started taking pictures.

I first became interested in photography in 2009. Ten months into my time in Melbourne, Australia, I was set to head to the bright lights of Hong Kong when I went to a small camera store and bought a Panasonic Lumix LX3. Three weeks later, I was shooting the light trail images I had only a few days earlier, standing in the dark on a bridge in Hong Kong.

My journeys in pursuit of new experiences have been countless since I first picked up a camera. As a result, in 2019 I decided to base myself permanently outside of the UK and started a photography adventure tour company, first in Tbilisi, Georgia. But as I developed it, my artistic journey went on, and I moved to Istanbul, Türkiye – at the beginning of 2022.

My portfolio shows that travel is a key component of my photographic storytelling. My curiosity about various cuisines, textures, colours, and cultures inspires me to travel to new places. My steadfast passion for photography and my love of travel inspire me to conduct thorough research and arrange all the necessary logistics so that I can take my camera to some truly unique places.

Some history

2010

The journey begins

It was after ten months based in Melbourne, Australia (back in 2009) and I was about to travel to the bright lights of Hong Kong that I visited a small camera store and purchased a Panasonic Lumix LX3.

Having stumbled across architecture photography in late 2013, I began shooting my first abandoned building series ‘Decadence’ – named after my first exhibition back in my home city of Norwich, UK.

I turned full-time artist/photographer in April 2018, this was after a seven-year stint working in the events industry. My first challenge at this point – was to go on the road full-time to set up some urban adventure photo tours, which would initially be in Georgia.

2019

I took to the road initially full-time. The aim, to base myself in cheaper destinations as I set up these tours. My first destination would be Tbilisi, Georgia. And during the initial 7 months there – I would conduct 5 week long photo tours, and 13 day trips around the Capital.

2020 - 2022

The difficult years

During this time I was still based in Tbilisi. The aim at this point was to build deeper foundations – I did so, in the form of online camera club talks. Conducting some 350 during the initial stages of the pandemic as the camera club world went online.

After deciding on a destination, I opted for the move to Turkish soil in February of 2022 as I moved to Istanbul. In December 2022, I got engaged and married in June 2023, it seems Istanbul has chosen me.
